NEMO Switchback Sleeping Pad

We needed a new sleeping pad for our tent camping trip to Montana. When we found that the Therm-a-Rest Z Lite was not available we ended up purchasing the Nemo Switchback Sleeping Pad. Here is our review of how the Switchback Pad did while camping in both rocky and grassy campsites.

Our Review:

Embarking on a camping trip to Montana, we found ourselves in need of a reliable sleeping pad. Our initial plan to grab the Therm-a-Rest Z-Light from REI hit a snag as they were out of stock. Undeterred, we opted for an alternative – the Nemo Switchback.

The Quest for Comfort

Our camping adventure took an unexpected turn when the temperatures dipped to 33 degrees. Choosing the Nemo Switchback, we were pleasantly surprised by its performance – no moisture or coldness permeated through, providing a comfortable night's sleep.

Ultralight and Convenient

Weighing in at 14.5 ounces, the Switchback is an ultralight pad that won't burden your backpack. With dimensions of 72 inches by 20 inches and a thickness of 0.9 inches, it's compact and easy to strap onto your gear. What sets it apart is its unique pattern of cushions, offering a different feel compared to the straight-line design of the Z Seat.

Installation and Insulation

Setting up the Switchback is a breeze – no need for air, just open it up, throw it on the ground, and you're good to go. With an R value of 2.0, it proved effective in temperatures as low as the 30s. While we both found it to be insulating and comfortable, Greg noted a slight squeakiness when he moved around, particularly on a tent floor.

Personal Preferences

Our experiences with the Switchback varied based on the terrain. On a rocky platform, it provided an excellent barrier, eliminating the feel of rocks beneath. However, on a grassy and soft surface, Greg felt it lacked sufficient padding. Personal preferences play a role, and the Switchback might cater better to specific sleeping preferences.

Overall Thoughts

The Nemo Switchback is a decently cushioned ultra-lightweight sleeping pad, ideal for those seeking a balance between weight and comfort. While it might not be the perfect fit for everyone, it performed admirably in various conditions. If you're considering a thru-hike on the AT or the Camino, this pad could be a suitable companion.
